What is Integrative and Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine is an approach that seeks to find and treat the root causes of disease or illness. There is heavy emphasis on genetics, environmental and lifestyle factors.
Integrative Medicine, like functional medicine, seeks to find the root causes of disease in a similar fashion but with added emphasis on herbalism, mind-body connection, and traditional eastern medicine including acupuncture.
We practice a little in the middle. We don’t offer chiropractic care, acupuncture (but we will refer our for it) or yoga but definitely are fans of herbalism and supplements. But our biggest priority is the one shared between these two specialities - finding root causes of ailments and fixing them.

The biggest way that we are different from other facilities that offer these services is that we prioritize your health over our business. We are not sales people. We do not "market" to our patients. We welcome questions and provide honest answers.
Integrative Medicine differs drastically from regular medicine in that it emphasizes, bolds and underlines the requirement to not simply look at the person in front of you but to see them. Consider them, their lifestyle, their stress, their genetics, their environment, their history, their belief system - every detail that makes them who they are - before you make a medical decision. Preventative care (like cancer) screening isn't taken at face value. If someone has a number of small risk factors for cancer that cumulatively add up to a similar risk as some of the big risk factors that change screening guidance, why wouldn't you change screening guidance for the individual? Granted, insurance coverage is often tied to these "guidelines" but decisions can be appealed and there are cash pay options are available.
Integrative Medicine prefers lifestyle, nutritional and (sometimes) supplemental solutions are ideal - they come with the least amount of risk and are more likely to fix the root of the problem, not just be a bandaid. We shouldn't be treating symptoms without at least trying to address the cause.
While diet, exercise, nutrition, herbal remedies, supplements and stress reduction are great - often they are not enough. In these instances Integrative Medicine providers will use traditional therapies, testing and referrals. Just like with integrative methods, however, the provider shares the risks, benefits, and decision making with the patient. Our clinical knowledge is a guide and we are a resource for our patients to make informed decisions.

Every patient is different in their needs. Some people defer to clinician judgement and don't want to know the specifics. Some patients prefer to just treat the symptom. We welcome these patients. Integrative Medicine's only prefernce is that we meet the patient's individual needs.
